Can Hatch of 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon be Opened With Yakima FullBack Attached
Question:
Can you open the hatch of a Subaru Outback with the Yakima rack attached?

Expert Reply:
Due to the way the trunk-mounted bike racks such as the Yakima FullBack # Y02634 attach you cannot open the hatch of a vehicle such as your 2018 Subaru Outback with the rack mounted; doing so could damage the vehicle or the rack, particularly because the weight of the rack could make the hatch unexpectedly close after you have it up so you definitely need to remove it prior to opening your Subaru's hatch.
If you want to open your hatch with a bike rack on you will need to use a trailer hitch and hitch-mounted bike rack. For a hitch the best option is the Draw-Tite # 75673 which is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver which gives you plenty of options for a rack.
With this hitch on your Outback a great option for a rack would be the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B which has an upright mast which folds down with your bikes unloaded so you can access your Outback's hatch, is lightweight at 21 lbs and has a shank which gives you 8" of rise for added ground clearance.
This is a frame-mounted rack which has a 60 lb per bike capacity and to protect your investments you can add anti-rattle hitch lock # SA3022 to lock the rack to your hitch and cable lock # SA981 to lock your bikes to the rack.
