Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1979 Jeep CJ-5

Question:

I'm not quite sure by what you mean by what you need as far as the "transmission and powertrain", would you be able to get back to me as far as what parts you are specifically asking about? Also, for any information I would need to know what model of 1979 Jeep you have.

I was unable to find an online copy of the owner's manual for a 1979 Jeep CJ-5 to find out if this car can be flat towed or if there are any special procedures you need to follow in order to do it but your version of the manual should have those details, which are often found under "recreational towing." Should you find out you can flat tow your '79 Jeep there are a number of parts you're going to need in order to do this, starting with compatible base plates. The only available base plates for your Jeep, so long as it has the standard factory bumper, are the Demco Classic # DM9518112. For a tow bar I recommend going with the Demco Excali-Bar III Non-Binding Tow Bar # DM9511013 because of its non-binding design and the fact it has integrated safety chains. For wiring kit that will allow your Jeep's lights to function while being towed I recommend a removable light kit such as # RM-2120. Finally, it is likely you will need a high-low adapter such as # RM-076 to keep your tow bar level with your tow vehicle. The adapter you need is going to depend on some measurements you'll need to take. I have added a link to a help article on high-low adapters which explains the measurements you'll need, as well as a link to our page with our selection of adapters. I strongly recommend contacting a Jeep dealer in order find out if there are additional parts such as a stop light switch needed; on vehicles with this type of age on them a dealership will be your best source of information in regards to the needed components.
