Troubleshooting Parts Needed for Eagle Scout Project Trailer Refurbishing

Question:

Team, My son is embarking on an Eagle Scout project for a local organization that is an urban farm that provides produce to a part of our city that is considered a food desert. They have assigned him a project for his Eagle Scout project. It is refurbishing an old rusted out trailer that was donated that they would like to use to haul things. Neither my son nor I know anything about this type of project. We have the assistance of the men running the farm but they are novices at this type of project as well. We are getting ready to buy the axels, wheels, lights, etc... - everything we need from your site. I was impressed with your expert replies to the emails and am just looking for a little assistance with this size project. Let me know. Dad seeking to help his son...

I am happy to help you get the parts you need for the Eagle Scout project to serve your city. There are many parts that go into a trailer, so why don't we start with a photo of the project if you can supply it and give me as much information as you can.

Here are places to start:

What is the current axle length from hub face to hub face and spring seat to spring seat (on center)? See attached photo.

What does it say on the side of the current tires? All the numbers mean something, so I've attached an article to assist.

If you take off one of the wheels, is the hub an idler hub (no brakes) or a hub/drum for brakes? What is the bolt pattern of the hub and if it is a drum what is the diameter?

I've attached some articles to help. Let me know this info and then we can take it step by step and you can ask whatever questions you have along the way. Let's do the mechanical components and then the electric.
