How to Secure Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack to Vehicle

Question:

What would I need to lock this rack to my car to ensure it doesn’t get stolen? Once the rack is secured, can I just use a regular cable lock to secure the bike to the rack? Also, can the trunk be open with a rack on it? Thanks!

To secure the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack # HRF2-3 that you referenced to your vehicle I recommend using the Thule Passive Security Strap # TH533. This works by simply looping around the bike rack at one end and then closing the round puck at the other end inside the closed trunk or rear hatch. The dual steel cables provide superior strength and the puck ensures that the carrier won't be removed as long as the trunk/hatch is closed.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.

Then to lock the bikes to the rack a standard cable lock like the etrailer.com # e98891 will work perfectly.

You will need to remove the Hollywood 3 Bike Rack from your vehicle before opening the trunk. This is the case with any trunk-mounted bike rack because of how it mounts to the vehicle. Trunk lids and rear hatches also aren't built to support any weight on them while they are being opened, so leaving the rack on while opening the trunk may even cause damage to the vehicle.
