Recommended E-Bike Rack for 2012 Jeep Wrangler with Rear Spare Tire

Question:

I have two 50# e-bikes and a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a rear mounted spare tire. What are my bike rack options? I am sure my Hollywood spare tire mount cant handle these e-bikes!

For your two 50 pound e-bikes you will definitely want to go with a hitch-mounted carrier that features a platform design and has the needed weight capacity for the bikes. You are right that your existing spare tire carrier won't be able to handle this type of combined weight.

When looking for a hitch-mounted bike rack, I first recommend taking a quick measurement on your Jeep. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the outermost edge of the spare tire. This will give you the clearance needed on a bike rack so that it doesn't make contact with the spare when installed.

For an e-bike carrier that features a generous clearance dimension, I recommend taking a look at the Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX # SA4025F. This platform-style rack can handle 2 bikes that are up to 60 pounds each and it features ratcheting, padded hooks that will grip the bikes by their wheels without any frame contact. There is a distance of 12 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack. As long as the measurement you took on your Jeep is less than 12 inches, this rack will work great. It is compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. Locks are also included to help secure your investments.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this bike rack that you can also check out.
