Transmission Filter Extender for a Pan Transmission Cooler for a 1999 Dodge Dakota with 5.9 Liter
Question:
Is the filter adapter required to be used with the Dodge trans pan cooler? Would the pan cooler be more or less effective than one of the universal fit models understanding that the effectiveness of the cooler will depend on its size? Is there a drawback to combining a pan cooler with one of the universal fit coolers? I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota R/T with the 5.9L. Thanks!

It is strongly recommended to use the Filter Extender, # D14010, when you add a Pan Cooler type of transmission cooler like # D14210. It is not required to install the cooler or allow it to work though. but you would not want to get caught in a situation later where it becomes a hindrance not having one. Please note that this cooler is made for vehicles with an A518 (46RH or 46RE), A618 (47RH, 47RH, or 48RE), or A727 (36RH or 37RH) transmission.
Transmission fluid cannot be overcooled so you could use an additional transmission cooler if you wanted to. It will take longer for the transmission to warm up in cold weather with greater cooling capacity. You would not really need a large one if you also install the pan cooler so # D13502 and fitting # D13030 would be a good choice. I have included links to our FAQ article on transmission cooler and a video showing a typical application.
