Fifth Wheel Hitch for 2009 GMC Sierra That Allows 90 Degree Turn

Question:

What I’m asking is what do I have to get, so I don’t have to get out of the truck to do a 90 degree turn with my fifth wheel.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking; is it about what wedge to use or is it about if you can use a Sidewinder with your current hitch? Either way I do need to know the model number of your hitch, which should be somewhere on the hitch itself.

I took a look at the owner's manual for a 2016 Grand Design Solitude and it says the factory-installed pin box is not interchangeable so you would be unable to use a Sidewinder. There is only one option available so you would not have to get out of your truck to make a 90 degree turn and that is the Demco Hijacker # DM8550034 fifth wheel hitch. This hitch uses an autoslide made precisely to do what you are looking for - stay in your truck while making a sharp turn. The Hijacker fits on industry-standard above-bed rails and has an 18,000 lb towing capacity. Since you have a Trailair Rota-Flex you would need to use Demco Hijacker Autoslide Capture Plates for Trailair Rota-Flex Pin Boxes # DM6171 with the hitch. You can use the following formula to ensure this hitch will allow you to make a 90 degree turn in your '09 Sierra: (A+B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab B = Length of Travel (14") C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half) It is recommended you have at least 4 inches of clearance to make a 90 degree turn.
