The problem you described could be caused by a few different issues. The easiest way to proceed would be to hook the trailer up to another vehicle or hook the vehicle up to another trailer as this should allow you to determine if the issue is on the trailer or vehicle. Once you do this you will first want to check the trailer connector for corrosion in addition to wiggling the wires that attach to them to make sure they are tight. If the trailer connector checks out you will then need to move onto the grounds of both the trailer connector and lights on the trailer if that is the side the issue is present. If all else fails you will need to begin tracing each of the the wires back while checking for breaks as they could either be shorting out to one another or the frame.
