Will the Thule basket fit directly into the pro top camper shell rails. And is so which one do you recommend for the short shell on 5ft box colorado.

As long as the rails (or crossbars) are spread between 20 inches and 37 inches when measured center-to-center, then the Thule Roof Cargo Basket # TH859XT that you referenced will fit and work well. To find your crossbar spread you simply need to measure from the center of your front crossbar to the center of your rear crossbar.

When it comes to best rack for a camper shell one thing to note is the weight capacity of the shell itself. This basket weighs 29 lbs and can carry up to 150 lbs. To get the maximum out of this basket your roof rack and shell will need to support 179 lbs. Otherwise simply subtract 29 lbs from those capacities and that gives you the weight of your cargo.
