I checked with Thule and the item you selected, Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH910XT, will fit your 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback. The Thule Passage is a great choice for a trunk mount bike rack, as it features anti-sway cradles to keep your bikes from moving around when being carried.

If you will be carrying more than 2 bikes, we have the 3 bike version, the Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier # TH911XT, which will also fit your Mazda.

When mounting a trunk bike rack to your vehicle, you will want to make sure the exterior of the vehicle is clean and free of dirt and debris. I would recommend using a coat of automotive wax in the spots where the bike rack will mount which will help prevent scratching. Also make sure the mounting pads of the bike rack and clean.

If you plan to carry womens, childrens, or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend using the Thule Bike Adapter Bar, part # TH982XT. Using the Thule adapter bar will allow you to carry those types of bikes level and make mounting the bikes to the rack easier.
