Can a Solar Panel be Connected Directly to 6V Batteries  

Question:

I just had an rv dealer wite two 6v batteries. There are two wires to the ground terminal and two wites to the positive terminal, one of the wires has a fuse. I have a 170 w solar panel on the roof. Why are there two wires to ground and two wires to positive, one with a fuse that is smaller guage.

I'm guessing that your two 6V batteries are either wired in series or in parallel (see attached photo). Either way, it sounds like the solar panel was connected directly to your batteries. Although this can technically be done, I recommend installing the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D to ensure that your batteries do not receive too much charge.

If the solar panel is the sole charging unit for your batteries then you should be okay, but if your alternator will also be providing a charge then I highly recommend using one of the above-mentioned products.
