Difference Between Tow Ready # 20142 and Curt # C57003 Adapters with Lamp-Out Sensors  

Question:

I have a 2018 Audi Q5 and am planning on installing a Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller on my trailer, which has LED lights. Based on information Ive seen on this site, I know I also need to deal with the Lamp-Out issue created by the LED lights on the trailer. My question is, should I use the Curt C57003 or the TowReady 20142 solution? Do they both serve the same purpose and one is just an adapter while the other has a mounting option?

If you will be towing a trailer with LED lights then you will likely need to use an adapter with a lamp-out sensor like the Tow Ready # 20142 or Curt # C57003 that you referenced. Both of these adapters will accomplish the same task; plugging into an existing 7-Way on your Audi and providing a new 7-Way that is able to recognize the LED trailer lights. The only difference between the two items is the bracket/housing and the wire extension on the Curt # C57003. If you don't need this and want a more unassuming adapter, the Tow Ready # 20142 is the way to go.

The thing is I dont have any L E D Lights on any of my trailers. But I definitely will chk the other things out that you mentioned. Thanks

Let me know what you find. I don't think the type of lights on the trailer (LED or incandescent) is the issue.

I have a 2015 f150 ford sport xlt with factory 7 way and a 4 way plug with tow hitch. on my utlity trailer every time i hook it up on dash it trailer default or chk left turn signal or trailer module default. also if i hook up my travel trailer my electric brakes wont work. i dont know if its the brake controller or if its something with the truck. does anyone have a answer.

Other than the error messages on the dash, is there a specific function that's not working on the utility trailer when it's hooked up (like the electric brakes on the travel trailer)? It definitely sounds like something's going on with that factory harness. I'd start by checking the brake output circuit - inspect the connector itself for any debris/corrosion inside the pins. Then inspect the wiring directly behind the connector (brake output should be blue) and make sure it's securely connected without any frayed or damaged portions. You might also check your towing related fuses under the hood to make sure they're all in good condition. The owner's manual will list their locations.

@ChrisR As a followup to your explanation of the difference between the Curt C57003 and the Tow Ready 20142. I understand resistor(s) are used to create the appearance of additional current on each of the products. 1. Does each product use the same resistor value and line placement making them identical in function?; 2. Where are the resistor(s) placed in each product; are they on the taillight line only, or are they on the brake/turn signal lines as well? Thank you.

@MikeH I wasn't able to get specs on the resistor values but from answers we've received in the past they work in the same manner. When it comes to placement of the resistors I believe it's for all of the circuits. When I reached out to Curt that's what they told me about their adapter.
