Recommended Trailer Axle Replacement for 3,500 lb Axle on Custom Width Trailer
Question:
Howdy, I have a standard single axle 5 by 8 trailer. My axle is 2.4inch in diameter, so I dont know if its classified as 2 3/8 or 2 1/2. But I was wondering if you know the INNER diameter. I am going to shorten it, and havent made the cut yet, so Im not sure if Im going to put a plug inside the two ends or over the two ends.

It sounds like you have a 3,500 lb axle and it would be classified as a 2-3/8 inch axle. Most axles use a hollow tube but I wouldn't recommend you use a plug inside but rather cut the ends and replace the spindles. This is a job for a professional as the slightest misalignment can cause issues. You also may need to adjust your spring seat locations. Cutting your axle will impact it's capacity in some way and how it flexes to absorb shock, so you may want to consider replacing it instead.
If you have already considered this and just need a custom length, than I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Hubs - Straight Spindle - 5 on 4-1/2 - # A35RS545 or # A35RS545E with brake assemblies to give you the custom width desired. You simply use a 2 inch square bar (not included) cut to length utilizing the integrated holes of the assemblies. This system gives you the suspension as well so there is no reworking of the hangers or leaf springs seats needed.
