Help Determining if 2006 Toyota Tundra has Tow Package

Question:

Hi There, I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra 4 x 4 Double Cab. Ive been under the impression that the truck came with the factory tow package. The reason I am asking is due to the significant rated tow capacity with a factory tow package vs. non. I checked the VIN at the local dealership and they were not sure. The truck was purchased used and came from out of state. Is there a way you can tell? I have a Tekonsha brake controller installed. And the hitch itself looks like a Toyota bolted to the frame with a 7 way plug. One person said the Tekonsha is a giveaway that it does not have the factory tow package but I am not convinced. Is the difference in the rated tow capacity largely a function of the hitch? Thank you for your help!

Since it looks like you have a factory hitch and a factory 7-way at the rear of your truck that's a very good indicator that you have the tow package. Toyota does not have an integrated brake controller they could have installed in your truck from the factory so the Tekonsha controller would not indicate anything aside from the fact it was used to tow at some point. Trace the wiring of the controller. If it plugs into your truck with a connector like the part # 3040-P that's really good sign it has the tow package. If it is hardwired to your truck that would indicate otherwise. I attached a picture of what the brake controller install plug would look like on your truck if it was equipped.

You can also check the door jamp of the vehicle and you should see a sticker with towing capacities as well as other weight capacities listed there.
