Can Knicked Spindle be Smoothed Out and Reused

Question:

Hello, My 1999 EZ Loader Boat Trailer had one wheel with a wobble. The weight of the boat ended up shattering the inner Bearing. Now the Spindle is knicked. Can we smooth out the Spindle or should we just get a whole new axle? It has 4 tires so should we replace both axles? I think the spindles are welded on - is that true? Please help! Thank you,

You definitely want to avoid smoothing out the spindle because all of those pieces fit together with precision. Replacing the spindle is possible but the issue with that is that it will have to be cut out and then a new one installed by a professional welder. This also has to be done with precision so in this case it is much better to get a new axle so that you can ensure everything is aligned properly.

To choose a replacement axle you need to find your hub-face (A) and spring-center (B) measurements as well as the weight capacity of your current axle. Choose a replacement axle that has the exact same specs that I just mentioned to keep your trailer riding level. I have attached a picture showing where to measure as well as a link to our selection of axles for you to filter through. You will not need to replace both axles, only the one with a damaged spindle.

You may also want to check your suspension. If your tire/wheel was wobbling then it was damaged, didn't have the correct psi for air, or your suspension is really messed up. If you replace your axle but another part of your suspension is messed up then you will experience this same situation in the future.
