Recommendation of Transmission and Oil Cooler For a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4WD
Question:
Just purchased our first travel trailer! We have a 2008 Suburban 1500 4WD 5.3 L. The RV dealer is installing the brake control and equalizer hitch. I know we need a transmission cooler and engine oil cooler, but am unsure which ones would be best for our SUV. Also wondering how difficult these would be to install? Any other mechanical essentials I am needing? Thanks!

If you have enough room in front of your air conditioning condenser or in front of your radiator on your 2008 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4WD, I would recommend the Derale Combination Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler, part # D15902. This is a combination transmission and engine oil cooler that will keep both engine and transmission temperatures cool with just one system. It measures 17 inches wide x 12-1/2 inches tall x 3/4 inch deep.
You will also need the Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter, part # D13035, that will allow you to connect the cooler to your vehicles radiator.
The system installs inline with the transmission fluid and engine oil return on the vehicle so it is a pretty universal application. The kit supplied with the combination cooler will include multiple adapter sleeve nuts, one of which, will work on your Chevrolet Suburban. You will then use the standard size oil filter on the new filter landing on the sandwich adapter.
The one issue you will want to check for is the distance that the filter will be set off of the engine with the sandwich adapter in place. You will need to check to be sure there is enough room so that the filter can be set off by 1-3/4 inches, and you will still be able to remove and install the filter for oil changes.
If there is not enough room you can use the Derale Oil Filter Relocation Kit, part # D15715, to relocate the filter to a new more accessible location and use the Combination Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler on your vehicle.
I am including links to a couple of FAQ pages on transmission coolers and engine oil coolers. Also, a link to a FAQ page on trailer towing tips.
