Bike Rack to Use with the Bike Bunk CC-275 on a Vintage Travel Trailer

Question:

Hi guys, I have a 2005 Toyota 4Runner and am towing a 1962 13’ Vintage travel trailer. I’m wondering if you have had any feedback from anyone using a tray mounted bike rack vs a frame mounted hanging bike back. I know the turning clearance will change with every vehicle, but most people seem to use a rwck that hangs from the frame. Thanks!

The issues are actually a combination of weight capacity and rack/trailer compatibility. The Bike Bunk # CC-275 has a 100 pound capacity. Since platform racks are heavier than hanging racks you wouldn't have a lot of left over capacity for the bikes.

Also, only certain bike racks can be used on a travel trailer. This excludes a lot of platform and other bike racks. The Yakima HoldUp # Y02443 is not rated for use on a trailer so I do not recommend it.

The Swagman Dispatch # S44FR can be used for this application though. Again it is a heavy rack, about 50 pounds, so you are left with only 25 pounds for 1 bike.

Instead I recommend the Thule Range # Th9057. This rack weighs 36 pounds. Even though it is a 4 bike rack, you will not be able to use it for four bikes. You will be limited to 2 bikes weighing less than a combined weight of 64 pounds. I have linked videos on the Thule Range for you to look at.
