How Wide of a Kayak Can the Thule Hullavator Fit

Question:

Hi, When Thule says it can go up to a 36inch kayak width using the Hullavator Pro 898 How is that possible when the cradle opening does not open that wide? It appears to only open up to about 31inch installation following Thulesfoot instructions for the Pro 898. My boat is 33inch wide at the gunnels Top centerline and it definitely doesnt go that wide. Loading upside down as not to damage the hull of kayak. Please advise.

Due to the shape of most kayaks tapering in width on the front and back and the fact that where the Thule Hullavator part # TH898 grabs the kayak is typically at a much narrower width than the widest point of the kayak Thule states that this carrier can carry a 36 inch wide kayak. That said, if the crossbars of your roof rack are narrower than usual this figure might get skewed. Plus you have to factor in the taper of all kayak isn't the same. If you can space out your crossbars any further you should be fine.
