Can a Weight Distribution System Resolve Too Much Tongue Weight?

Question:

Hi There, I recently purchased a Zinger Lite 18RD, which has a dry tongue weight of 524 pounds. I am towing with a 2011 Santa Fe, which has tongue weight rating of 350 pounds. I failed to take this difference into account when buying the trailer. I have a Fast-Way E2 weight distribution system, Item # FA94-00-0600. Can this be adjusted to transfer the tongue weight effectively, or do I need to consider purchasing a larger tow vehicle?

Your 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe has a stock max tongue weight of 350 lbs. Many hitches will allow for more weight, for instance the Draw-Tite # 75684 is a confirmed fit for your vehicle with a rated tongue weight of 350 lbs without weight distribution or 500 lbs with weight distribution. This hitch is the only one we carry with a weight distribution system rating and you are already well over that with your dry tongue weight rating. If the vehicle were capable of the load then the hitch would be the only limiting factor.

The trailer you are wanting to tow is simply too large for your vehicle, so you will want to upgrade your vehicle. You can damage your transmission, suspension, and other components if try to tow that trailer with your Santa Fe. I definitely recommend upgrading your tow vehicle for that trailer.

You will also very likely be over the capacity of your weight distribution system # FA92-00-0600. This is rated for total tongue weights of 250 to 600 lbs. That total tongue weight is the completely loaded trailer tongue weight as well as any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Your dry weight (empty) is almost there, so with a couple suitcases or other cargo you are already too heavy for that system as well. I've attached an article to help further.
