The weight distribution systems that use a simple friction-bar for sway control, such as the Pro Series # PS49901, cannot be backed up until you either release the tension on that friction arm's hand control or simply disconnect it entirely. These simple friction devices can help with trailer sway because their friction works to stop the swaying motion of the trailer.
Better weight distribution systems use other methods for sway control and sway prevention and these other systems (that do not use this type of friction device) DO let you back up a trailer without having to disconnect anything. These other systems use integrated anti-sway, rather than the simple friction bars, and so they also work much better in addition to allowing you to back up.
