Switching Off Brakes when Traveling Steep Pass?

Question:

Isolate my surge brake solenoid. I would like to wire in a switch to disconnect the surge brake solenoid in order to travel down a steep pass and not burning out my trailer brakes

Expert Reply:

A solenoid in a surge brake actuator only prevents your brakes from locking up while going in reverse, so disconnecting it would not be effective. Also, please do not go down a steep pass with a trailer and try to avoid using brakes; the weight of the trailer will push your tow vehicle and you won't have as much control. If you go slowly you won't burn out your brakes and more importantly it is much safer to use your brakes when going downhill.
