Constant Red Light on the Hayes Energize XPC Trailer Brake Controller Part HA81745
Question:
Our brake controller red light is still hot even when disconnected from trailer and brake controller. The vehicle and trailer stopped even when in drive position with no pressure to brake. The installer suggested it was electrical on our Chevy suburban 2008. We do have a new trailer, but it is lighter and we already did transport it once. The trailer did have a 15 volt electrical issue fixed, but even when the trailer was unhooked the red light came on to the brake controller. Where might the problem be.? All of the wires are disconnected from the controller. Thank you.

The red indicator light on your Hayes Energize XPC Trailer Brake Controller part HA81745 should only illuminate when the brakes on the vehicle are pressed or the manual override on the control is engaged. If the light has constant power then it would appear that either the red stop light switch wire on the controller is connected to the wrong circuit or it is shorting out to another circuit.
The correct wire you will need to connect the red wire on the controller to is the one on the cold side of the brake pedal or the one that only gets power when the brake pedal is depressed. You can test this with a cricut tester like or run a new switch with part # RM-751452.
