Installing Battery Isolator 08771 in 2002 Ford Excursion

Question:

The alternator has one two wire plug with a black and red wire. It has a large yellow wire connected to a bolt on the back of the alternator. 1. Is this a type 2 alternator? 2. Do I need to connect the E terminal from the isolator to the ignition? 3. Can I wire the auxilary battery and a two pole plug which goes to the trailer battery to charge it to the same isolator? 4. Which wire sizes do you recommend? Isolator to the auxiliary battery if located under the hood 5 feet. Isolator to the auxiliary battery if located in the back 20 feet. Isolator to the trailer plug 20 feet plus the distance from the plug to the trailer battery 8 feet Total 28 feet. 5. What size and locations of circuit breakers? 6. Any other suggestions?

I have a diagram attached that shows all of the intended connectors from the Deka Battery Isolator # DW08771 to your 2002 Ford Excursion. Terminal E would connect to the an ignition circuit that's hot only when the key is switched on via a 6 amp breaker. When talking to an install technician they advised me that a 2 type alternator is not important when your goal is to just wire in a auxiliary battery.

As long as the circuits are not overloaded or the power is too much for the isolator. You can charge the trailer battery to the same isolator.

I recommend the Deka Battery Isolator Installation Kit for Standard Alternators # DW08768 and # DW08769 to help with the install process. # DW08769 has a 50-Amp circuit breaker. I have the circuit breaker diagram attached to this page.
