Should Prodigy P2 Brake Controller Show Two Dots on the Display When Not Connected to Trailer

Question:

I installed the tekonsha p-2 on my 2016 jeep grand cherokee and it was easy. The problem I have is that the dots on the screen stay lit even when the car is off and no trailer is attached. Is this normal

What you described is perfectly normal. When not connected to a trailer the Prodigy P2 part # 90885 will show two dots like you described. After a period of inactivity the controller will go into sleep mode. It doesn't turn off with the vehicle because in an emergency situation if your tow vehicle were to somehow shut off you'd still want the controller to work.

What if the 2 dots don’t go off. Is there a problem

How long are you talking for? The Tekonsha controllers tend to have about a 15 minute timer when it comes to inactivity before they go to sleep completely. What you'd need to do is get out of the vehicle and then 15 minutes later go and peer through the window without touching the vehicle to see if those dots are still on. If you were to open up the door then the controller would likely sense movement and come out of sleep mode.
