So will this work unwired to just plug in and check tow vehicle ?

If you were looking for a 7-way tester that's a standalone tester and does not need to wire to a trailer you'd want the 7-Way tester part # C73NR which plugs into a 7-way socket and will let you know which circuits are active. See attached review video.
