7-Way to 5-Way Recommendation for 2018 GMC Sierra 2500

Question:

Hello I have a 1996 Ranger Boats trailer with 5 wires. It has the solenoid in the front as many boats do to help with braking. Had a wiring issue and need to know what I need to reconnect it to my truck which is a 2018 GMC and has the bigger round plug. I have everything but my running lights for some reason. Can you tell me why or what I need? Thanks

Your 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 has a standard 7-Way trailer wiring connector so to convert it to a 5-way will require you to use an adapter like the Mighty Cord Trailer Connector Adapter # A10-7275VP and you'd be set.

To track down where the running light issue is you'll need to determine if it's on the truck or trailer side of the wiring. You can do this by testing the running light pin of the 7-way (11:00 position) with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to see if there's voltage there. If so, the problem is on the wiring and most likely ground-related. If not, then the problem is most likely a blown fuse under the hood of your truck.
