Solution for Connecting 5-Way Flat on Tow Vehicle to 7-Way on Trailer

Question:

I have a 2007 Tacoma. I am preparing to purchase a Jayco travel trailer. I can not seem to find an adapter from the 5 pin flat plug on my truck to a 7 pin round on the Jayco trailer. I dont want to have to cut and splice, of course I will if I need to, but it seems like there should be an adapter I realize that 2 of the pins on the trailer harness will be dead, that is not a problem. Thanks for any help!

I do have a solution for you, however there is not currently an adapter available that will connect to the 5-Way on your Toyota Tacoma and provide a 7-Way on the other end to connect with your trailer.

Your best option may simply be to cut off the 5-Way flat connector on your truck and connect the wires to a 7-Way like the Hopkins Endurance # HM47210. You will want to test the vehicle wires for function with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and make sure you connect them to the appropriate pins on the 7-Way. I have attached an image of how the 7-Way should be wired up that you can use for reference.

Then, if you need to still occasionally tow a trailer that is equipped with a 5-Way, you can just use an adapter like the Hopkins # HM47570. This will plug right into the 7-Way and provide a 5-Way flat on the other end (along with a 4-Way and 6-Way).

I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these products that you can also check out.
