Does a Weight Distribution System Increase Towing Capacity

Is it true that a weight distribution system raises the weight capacity of the trailer?

Expert Reply:
Weight distribution systems can sometimes increase the overall towing capacity of a tow vehicle but not a trailer. The trailer's capacity would not change. If a WD system can increase the capacity for a tow vehicle there will be a second set of capacities listed on the hitch that is higher that are listed as "weight distribution capacity".
Without a WD system the capacity is normally listed as "weight carrying".
