If the trailer you are pulling is equipped with electric brakes, and your Chevy Avalanche is not equipped with the factory brake controller, then you will definitely want to add one to allow for safe braking with the trailer attached and to also relieve stress on the truck.
If your Avalanche has the factory 7-Way connector at the rear, you will just need the brake controller itself. For this, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your truck. It features an easy-to-read LCD display, storable settings, and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.
There isn't a plug-in port available under the dash of your Chevy Avalanche, but if you have the factory 7-Way, all the needed wires are already run. You will just need to connect the wiring coming from the brake controller to the wiring already present under the dash. On the controller, the red wire will go to the cold side of the brake light switch, the blue wire is for brake output, the black wire is for 12V power, and the white wire is for ground.
I have attached a short video demonstration on the Prodigy P3 that you can take a look at.
