In order to tow your 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL550 behind your motorhome, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. Before proceeding, I also recommend checking your copy of the vehicle's owner's manual for any restrictions or guidelines when it comes to flat towing the GL550. I also recommend checking with a local Mercedes dealer, as it's possible that this particular model may need a lube pump due to potential issues with it overheating while being flat towed.

Starting with the base plates, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1992. These custom-fit base plates feature hidden reinforcements and removable bracket arms to provide a clean look when you aren't towing. All of the needed hardware is included.

For a tow bar, I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380. This is an excellent tow bar that is compatible with the above mentioned Blue Ox Base Plates and has a self-aligning design that allows for easy hookup. Safety cables are also included so they won't need to be purchased separately. The tow bar has a weight capacity of 6,500 pounds.

Then, for a lighting solution, I really like the Roadmaster Diode Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit will let you wire your Mercedes-Benz to accept the RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing. It includes a 6-Way connector that you will install at the front of the vehicle, and enough coiled wiring to go from there to the 7-Way on the RV.

For a supplemental braking system, I recommend taking a look at the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This is a great proportional system that will physically press down on the brake pedal inside the Mercedes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to tin your RV.

Lastly, in order to keep the tow bar level on your setup, you will likely need a high-low adapter. I have attached an article that explains how to choose the best one for your vehicle and RV, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included installation instructions on the products mentioned and an FAQ on flat towing that you might find helpful.
