Probable Performance Gains from Aftermarket Cold Air Intake

You ask a very reasonable question.
The makers of performance-enhancing products like programmers and cold air intakes (CAIs) base their estimated performance gains on ideal best-case circumstances. In other words, they presume that the vehicle is in top shape and has no deteriorated sub-systems that would limit the gains, such as fouled plugs or a dirty fuel system.
For instance, a tuner claimed to offer "up to 100 additional horsepower" that is installed in a vehicle with very worn spark plugs, sketchy wiring or a dirty air cleaner will absolutely NOT deliver the maximum gains possible.
The truth is that modern vehicle's systems are so numerous and they interact with each other so much that it is virtually impossible to tell in advance what any given vehicle's actual improvement will be. Realistically you could expect roughly 10-hp gain in a vehicle that is in "average" condition.
