How to Increase Towing Performance with a 2006 GMC Sierra 3500

Question:

According to the owners manual for my 2006 GMC 3500 4X4 Crew Cab Long Bed, Max Trailer Weight is 12,000 lbs. and GCWR is 23,500, while the Extended Cab and Regular Cab are both rated @ over 16,000? Do aftermarket upgrades such as tire ratings, engine power adders, exhaust brake, vehicle braking, suspension, and cooling increase Towing Capacity? When I purchased this truck it had Banks Intake, Exhaust, and Six Gun installed. Tires were upgraded to LT235/85R16 LR E.

In order to determine the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) that you can haul with your 2006 GMC Sierra 3500, you will need to find both the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and the gross vehicle weight (GVW). If you subtract the GVW from the GCWR that will give you the maximum GTW you can safely tow. These figures can be found on the white tag inside your driver's door jamb.

Unfortunately, the towing capacity of your truck will not change even with the addition of performance enhancements. These items will all help the vehicle's towing experience but not its weight capacity. This figure is established by the manufacture and will remain unchanged for the life of the vehicle.

In order to maximize your vehicle's full potential, I recommend adding a set of suspension enhancements and a transmission/oil cooler. For a set of suspensions enhancements, I recommend using the ever popular Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK35S. This system will take some of the strain off of the vehicle while towing which will improve wear life, increase stability, and reduce body roll.

Then for an oil/transmission cooler, I recommend the Derale Combination Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler for GM Applications part # D15903 which is one of the most worthwhile add-ons you can install to increase the longevity of your engine/transmission, especially if you will be frequently towing heavy loads.
