Recommended Hitch & Bike Rack For Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have a 2017 Subaru Outback and currently have no hitch, but am in the market for one, primarily to carry bikes in the back. After reading reviews am included in install a 2inch rather then 1.25 inch hitch. Im most attracted to the hitch made by Stealth-hitch: Have you guys tested this particular model of hitch? If so, what are your thoughts? Also, Id most likely be using it to haul multiple bikes with either a Kuat either 2.0 base or Sherpa model, any compatibility or clearance issues you foresee? Since our Outback has a motorized rear hatch opening, would be especially important that this can open/close without hitting the bikes when the rear hatch opens. Thanks!

I have a great option for you but, we have not tested the Stealth hitch for the Subaru because we do not carry the product. However, if you are interested in a hitch with a hidden cross tube that installs behind your vehicle's rear bumper, leaving only the receiver visible beneath it, the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7266 fits the bill. It has a 2 inch receiver opening as requested.

From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is 16 inches of space. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 2-1/2 inches. That is plenty of room for a bike rack. The # 306-X7266 has a maximum gross trailer weight up to 3,500 lbs and maximum tongue weight up to 525 lbs. Check with your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon owners manual to see what is the maximum tongue weight for your vehicle.

The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack # SH22G and Kuat NV 2.0 Base # BA22B both tilt when your bikes ARE loaded for cargo area access. These racks give you clearance to access your motorized rear hatch area. These racks also fold up for storage (see picture). It installs without tools using the hand-tightening cam system and it includes locks to secure your bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle.

The # BA22B and the # SH22G have similar features, but the # BA22B will allow you to carry heavy and electric bikes.

We haven't heard of many clearance issues with these bike racks. Depending on the size of the bike, they may need to be removed to access rear hitch. Both racks are compatible with the # 306-X7266 and your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon.
