Can Second Axle be Added to Enclosed Snowmobile Trailer

I have an 8x12 hybrid enclosed snowmobile trailer with a single 3500lb idler axle. I’d like to add a second axle forward of the one it comes with. Can I safely add another axle? How do I determine the optimal placement? Will a second axle help relieve some of the tounge weight?

You can add a second axle to your SnoPro Hybrid Snowmobile Trailer but there are a couple of things you will want to keep in mind before proceeding.

Adding a second axle will definitely help with distributing your load better but it won't actually increase the overall weight capacity of the trailer. This is simply because a trailer will always be limited by its weakest link, meaning that even if your axle capacity might increase, the trailer frame itself is likely still rated for less weight.

Also note that in addition to adding an axle, you will likely need to remove and relocate your existing axle to allow for the correct placement. If you are wanting to still use your current axle, you will want to choose one that features matching dimensions and capacity.

If you are going to a tandem axle setup, you will need a total of 4 double-eye springs, 2 front hangers, 2 center hangers, 2 rear hangers, 2 equalizers, and 8 shackle straps. I have attached a link that will take you to our selection of suspension components you can look through. You may be able to reuse some of the parts you already have.

As far as axle placement goes, I have attached a great article that explains this process in detail that you can look through. It includes a couple of formulas that you will need to calculate on your trailer in order to determine where the axles will need to be positioned.
