When selecting a weight distribution system you will want one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded in the tow vehicle that is behind the rear axle. Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight so at 8,600 pounds at 15 percent, that would be 1,290 pounds. And at minimum 730 pounds.

Because there is such a wide range, from the 655 that you mentioned up to a possible 1,290 pounds, I recommend going with a 600 to 1,200 pound system UNLESS you determine the tongue weight will exceed 1,200 pounds.

Take a look at the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, # RP66084. This is the same as # RP66074, except that it includes the required shank so you will just need a properly sized ball like # 19286. It also comes with dual-cam sway control which is a proactive system that stops trailer sway before it starts.

I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control.

If you determine that your tongue weight will be higher, then I recommend the next step up, # RP66130. With this system you will also need a shank, # RP54970, and a properly sized ball like # 63840.
