High Speed Rated Trailer Tire Size 4.80-12

Question:

Hi. I have a new utility trailer that came with Carlisle Sport Trail LH 4.80-12 tires. I contacted Carlisle to ask what the speed rating for this tire is. Not that I dont trust them, but I was told 87mph. Do you agree with that? I will be pulling the trailer with 3 kayaks loaded on it. the weight wont exceed 200lbs. I was not sure if the load weight has any bearing on speed rating. I will be traveling on interstate highways, with speeds of 70-75mph. Thanks for any help.

Expert Reply:

87 MPH is really high for a trailer tire. Especially in the size of 4.80-12. Typically trailer tires are rated for 65 with some exceptions for 75 and 81 mph.

We have the Taskmaster Tire 4.80-12 part # TT48012C which is rated for 81 mph. You should see a speed rating your current tire as well that you can compare.
