Changing a 14K Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System to a 12K System

Question:

I just purchased an Equal-i-zer 4 point sway control 90-00-1400. The spring arms are too stiff for my trailer. I would like to step down to the 12,000 lb. spring arm. Are the 12,000 lb. and the 14,000 lb spring arms interchangeable in the 90-00-1400 head?

I spoke with my contact at Equal-i-zer who said that the arms of the 14K Weight Distribution (WD) system # EQ37140ET and the 12K WD system # EQ37120ET are compatible with each other. In fact, he said they are the exact same bars.

The difference between the systems actually stems from the head unit. To step down to the 12K system you will need to use the head unit # EQ90-02-1200 instead of the 14K head unit # EQ90-02-1400 that you are using.

You want to make sure your WD system has a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer.

The 12K system has a TW range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs. If your TTW doesn't fall inside this range just let me know and I can help you find the correct WD system for your towing application.
