It sounds like your new spot lights might simply be drawing too much power for the reverse light circuit on your truck to handle. In order to have the lights power on when going into reverse, you will need to tap into the vehicle's reverse light circuit, so there is not really another place where you could connect them.
I also recommend checking to make sure the lights are grounded properly, as a weak ground might be allowing for just enough power to turn the lights on, but not enough for them to remain activated.
If the lights are drawing too much power, your best option might be to simply wire them directly to the truck's battery and use a switch like # PK34571. This won't allow the lights to turn on automatically when going in reverse, but you can use the switch to power them on whenever they are needed.
