Expert Reply:
The Roadmaster # RM-523160-5 Base Plate Kit you looked at would be a good choice. The kit uses removable drawbars that re easily removed when you're not flat towing the vehicle.
The Roadmaster MX Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms, part # 3160-3B, are designed for SUVs that have a heavy duty frame, like your 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, so the tow bar you use does not need a crossbar. Since a crossbar is not needed the installation of the tow bar is easier. The MX base plates can only be used with tow bars that slide into a 2 inch hitch.
If you are using a tow bar that will slide into a 2 inch hitch I would recommend the MX base plate kit # 3160-3B.
For a tow bar I would recommend the RoadMaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. This tow bar can be used with either of the base plates (XL and MX) and will slide into a 2 inch hitch. I am including a link to a video review on the Falcon 2 tow bar.
To complete the towing set up for the Chevrolet Equinox, you will also need safety cables, light kit, and a supplemental braking system as required by law.
For safety cables, I recommend RoadMaster 64 inch Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables, part # RM-643.
For wiring, there are a couple of options. If you do not plan on towing the Equinox very often, I would go with the Magnetic Towing Light Kit, part # RM-2120. If you do plan on towing the Equinox frequently, it would beneficial to install the Hopkins Diode System, part # 38955. I have included a video along with a couple of useful FAQ articles on tow bar wiring that should help in choosing the best light kit for you along with how to go about wiring them.
For a braking system, The easiest to use and install is the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, # RM-9400. This unit installs quickly so you are ready to go in minutes. It engages the towed vehicle brakes proportionally to how much the towing vehicle is braking, reducing wear of both the towing vehicle and towed vehicle brakes. I am including a link to a FAQ page on braking systems.
Finally, you will need to check with the manufacturer and/or your vehicle owners manual for instructions on the proper procedure for towing your vehicle because some vehicles must be equipped with a transmission lube pump, an axle disconnect, drive line disconnect, or free-wheeling hubs before they can be towed.
