How to Set a 2000 Infiniti QX4 Up for Towing a Trailer with Brakes

Question:

I purchased the parts. I have the 4 pole connector already installed in the vehicle. I also have the 4 pole to 7pole connector. I ordered the wiring and the controller. The attached video talks about running the wring and connecting to the battery. However do you have any directions connecting the controller and wiring it.

In order to set your 2000 Infiniti QX4 up for towing a trailer with brakes you are first going to need a brake controller for which I recommend using the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885. I like this controller because it has integrated safeguard to protect both the vehicle and trailer in the event of a wiring issue. It also has a very easy to use LCD display which is what makes it our most popular selling controller.

Then you will need to convert the 4-way trailer connector on your vehicle to a 7-way trailer connector. The part you will need to do that looks like part # 37185. If you already have this adapter then the only other thing you will need is the wires and circuit breakers needed to complete the connections for which I recommend using part # 5506. However, if you do not have the above 4 to 7-way trailer connector adapter then you are going to want to use part # ETBC7 instead.

The combination of these parts will give you everything you will need to setup your Infiniti up for towing a trailer with brakes. Please keep in mind that there will be splicing involved but they do not make a plug-in harness for your vehicle so there will be no way around it. We have not had a chance to install a brake controller or 7-way trailer connector adapter on an Infiniti QX4 yet but if you take a look at the attached install video on a similar type of vehicle, this will give you a better idea of what all is involved.

Thank you for your purchase! In order to install the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885 on your 2000 Infiniti QX4 you will need to make four connections. The white wire on the harness is for the ground and will need to be connected to a bare metal surface. The blue wire is for the brake output and will need to be ran to the 7-way trailer connector. The red wire is for the stop light switch and will need to be attached to the cold side of the brake pedal or the third brake light. Finally, the black wire will need to be ran to the battery with a 40 amp circuit breaker placed 6" from the positive terminal. If you take a look at the 4:30 mark in the other attached install video on a Chrysler Aspen, you can see the above process.
