Can Shank be Removed from Spine on GearDeak 17 Enclosed Cargo Carrier

Question:

Does the spine assembly unbolt from the shank? We have modified a hitch mount cargo carrier and using existing holes on mounting bracket were able to drill through the frame and attach at front of trailer. It appears in the informational diagram that the spine assembly is bolted to the shank. We carry a large cooler in our current set up and since we live in bear country are wanting an enclosed carrier to put the cooler in. This product seems to fit the bill. Thanks for your help as I am unable to find a cargo box to do this. Like the way this opens for access to the cooler

The shank on the GearDeck 17 Enclosed Cargo Carrier # H00604 referenced in your question is actually welded to the spine portion of the assembly, so it cannot really be removed. Also just note that modifying this or any cargo carrier will likely void the manufacturer's warranty and might also affect its performance.
