Recommended Chevy Factory Brake Controller Function and Aftermarket Replacement Option
Question:
Hi I have a factory brake controller in my 2017 chevy 1500 with max tow package. What is the correct amperage the brake controller should be sending to the camper? We tested my camper 2017 outback 330rl weighs 8700lbs. And that at 100 is pulling 13 amps but by truck is only putting out 12 amps. Could that be the reason Im running 85 gain on my controller

The factory brake controller in your 2017 Chevy 1500 will send a constant 12V, but the amperage will depend on your trailer brake magnets. Most magnets will pull 3-4 amps each, so your dual axles on your trailer most likely each have a magnet and 12-13 amps sounds right. If you are needing more braking power, most people run their factory brake controllers at 100 percent gain because they aren't as well made as their aftermarket alternative. I recommend also checking your brake assemblies to ensure they are adjusted correctly if you are desiring better braking from your trailer.
If you want the best option for braking, you will need an aftermarket controller which in this case means you will bypass your current controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 with wiring harness # 22292 or the really nice and clean look of the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR and harness # TM75272
