Recommendation For Weight Distribution With Sway Control To Pull Trailer With 2017 Dodge Ram 2500
Question:
I drive a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 with a towing capacity of 17,200. We just bought a trailer that weighs 11,200 and has a 21,000 pound capacity. What would be the best weight distribution hitch for my situation.

In order to get the right Weight Distribution (WD) system for your 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 towing setup, you need to know your actual Tongue Weight (TW) when fully loaded and ready to tow. You will also need to include any weight from behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. To make this easier, I recommend using something like the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, Item # e99044. As you determine this weight, keep in mind that the TW is 10% to 15% of the total loaded weight of your trailer.
After you have that Tongue Weight (TW) figured out, your ideal WD system will be one where the total TW of your towing setup falls in the middle of the TW range of the WD system.
If the TW of your loaded trailer is 1,500-lbs to 1,600-lbs then the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, Item # RP66075, is a great choice because it has a TW range of 1,000-lbs to 1,700-lbs with a maximum gross towing weight of 17,000-lbs as well as the sway control.
This Reese Strait-Line system includes sway-control cams, head assembly, lift brackets, spring bars, lift chains, and the hardware needed to install and use the WD system. A shank and hitch ball are not included. For a shank, I recommend the Reese Titan Weight Distribution Shank, Item # RP54976. For a hitch ball, I recommend the Curt 2-5/16 Inch Hitch Ball, Item # C40085.
Regardless of what system you use, your maximum towing capacity will be the maximum capacity of your weakest towing system. Before towing, be sure to review your Dodge Ram 2500 owner's manual for weight capacities, limitations, and recommendations.
I have attached some articles and videos for you to review.
