How to Test Tow Package Wiring on 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude for Functionality

Question:

Is Dealer Programming Needed to Activate Tow Package Wiring in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude 4X4? Ive seen posts saying sometimes dealers do for other vehicles and Im not sure if that applies to my jeep. I just installed a hitch today and my wires were already ready to go from my jeep to be plugged into the trailer connector socket. The wires came prepared from the factory so im assuming i dont need to have the dealership activate anything but like I said im not sure and currently dont have a trailer to just go randomly hook up to and test it out on my own. Hopefully yall can help! Thank you.

It is easy enough to test your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee's factory wiring to confirm that it is functioning, even if you do not have a trailer handy. All you need is a simple and inexpensive circuit tester such as # PTW2993.

All you need is the tester and preferably also a helper to assist by activating the various lighting functions on the GC while you have the tester applied to the appropriate pins on the 7-way or 4-pole wiring connector. Please see the linked video.

Please refer to the linked article that shows both types of connectors and the lighting functions carried on each of their pins.

Usually the wiring fuses/relays needed are also installed at the factory but if the signals are not present on the connector when you activate the functions you can check your power distribution box under the hood for any missing fuses/relays related to trailer/towing functions.

Please refer to pages 388-394 of your owners manual for a listing of fuse locations, values and functions. Fuse positions F81 and F53 are among those related to towing.
