Can a Weight Distribution System Be Used on a Straight Pull Trailer with Swing Away Tongue
Question:
Hi, I have a boat trailer thats GVW is 5500lbs. The TW is 650lbs. Im towing it with a 2018 Toyota Highlander FWD and Im having an issue with the back sagging a lot to where the front wheels getting traction and some minor sway. BTW, my boat trailer has a Pivot Hitch as well which is about 22inch long then there is a straight section about 14inch long to where the A-frame portion of trailer starts. What do WD system do you recommend I order?

I do have an option for you that will help with trailer sway but a weight distribution system cannot be used on a trailer that has a swing away tongue. Therefore, your only option would to to use a friction style sway bar like the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit part # 83660 as long as the trailer does not have a surge brake coupler. The friction bar will help to reduce trailer sway caused by winds, curving roads or sudden maneuvers. You will need a sway control tab like part # RP26003 to use this system on your trailer/vehicle.
In due time, manufactures will start to release suspension enhancements for your Highlander that you can then use to take the vehicle sag out of the equation while towing your trailer. However at this time (April 2018), we do not have any suspension enhancements for your vehicle. Until then, you could however shift some weight around on the trailer so the tongue is not as heavy.
I have attached an installation video of the friction bar for you as well.
