Load Capacity - Wheel vs. Tire For Trailer Wheel and Tire Setup

Question:

I see that wheels boat trailer specifically have a load capacity and tires have a load range in maximum capacity, but which is more important? If I have a GVWR of 3800, would a wheel with a capacity of 1870 like the Taskmaster / Item # 460545MSPVD, coupled with a tire that is Load Range D such as the Provider ST215/75R14 / Item # TTWTRTM2157514D, which is the most important? Is the wheel being a lower capacity the determining factor, which in this case means that the wheel is not suitable for this situation? Thank you,

Expert Reply:

With any towing capacity you are limited by the lowest rated component. So if you have a wheel and tire with either of them having a different capacity you are limited by the lowest of the two capacities.

So the tire part # TTWTRTM2157514D has a capacity of 2,200 lbs and the wheel part # AM20364 has a capacity of 2,040 lbs so this would be the overall capacity. The part # LHSJ211G is a similar wheel with a high enough capacity for your 3,800 lb trailer as it has capacity of 1,900 lbs per wheel.
