How to Carry 2 Bikes on a 2016 Kia Sorento While Hauling a Trailer

Question:

Thank you for your reply. We knew about the jack-it rack for trailers. However, just about every review mentioned how difficult it was to get the inside bike on; lifting it over the rack or passing through to another person, using ladders and climbing over the tongue and l.p. tank. We are both over 70 & were hoping to find a rack that doesn't require so much in the way of lifting bikes over our heads and risking falls climbing around the maze of equipment on the tongue. Sigh.

The Yakima HangOut 2 Bike Rack part # Y02637 is indeed a confirmed fit for your 2016 Kia Sorento. Unfortunately, none of our trunk mounted bike racks including the HangOut can be left installed as the rear hatch/trunk is opened because the chance for interference is just too high. In regards to using the bike rack with a travel trailer, there is room for adjustment when installing this rack in that the actual rack could be placed further up on the vehicle but there would be no real way for me to give you a definitive yes or no answer as we have not yet installed this rack on a Kia Sorento.

A better option for you assuming you have an a-frame trailer with jack mount is the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack for A-Frame Trailers part # LC429756. This rack can hold up to 80 lbs total and holds the bikes by the wheels therefore you will not need to use an adapter bar.

With that being said, the Curt Clamp-On 3 Bike Rack part # C18013 may be a better option for you instead. This rack will not require you to lift the bikes up and over your head for installation. It simply clamps onto a 2" ball mount and provides you with an attachment point for up to three bikes. The carrier also only weighs 13 lbs which means it is extremely easy to install. In order to use this carrier on the back of your Sorento while towing I do have a few additional recommendations to make sure everything goes smoothly. The first of which would be an adapter bar like part # 64005 which will be needed if any of your bikes do not have a horizontal cross tube. The other suggestion would be to use a ball mount with an extended shank to further allow for the bikes to clear any obstructions on the trailer. I have attached a list of these options for you. You will need to first filter by the correct rise/drop before you make a selection. If you are unsure of how to find the correct amount of rise/drop to look for in a ball mount, I have attached a help article that will walk you thorough the entire process.
