Parts Need To Flat-Tow My 1999 Honda Civic

Question:

hey, I am tryingh to tow my 1999 honda civic from alaska to utah. I have a dodge that will be doing the actual towing. I would prefer to buy a package that will allow me to tow my car rather than renting a dolly to bring it the whole way. I am just undure on the packages that you are selling. is everything I need other than electical and such included in the package? can I buy it, install it and then without buying any other parts, concievably pull it with a vehicle already prepared to tow? if so, I will be interested! Thanks!

To flat-tow your 1999 Honda Civic to Utah behind a truck, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, wiring or lighting, and a supplemental braking system.

The item you selected, Roadmaster Classic Base Plate Kit, part # 510-15, will fit your Civic. The # 510-15 is a fixed arm base plate kit. You may want to consider a base plat kit with removable draw bars, like the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 510-1. With removable draw bars, the base plate kit is less visible on the vehicle when it is not hooked up for towing. Then when you want to flat-tow your Civic again, you would simple re-attach the draw bars, and hook your vehicle up to tow bar.

For a tow bar, I would recommend the RoadMaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520, which is a non-binding tow bar. A non-binding tow bar allows for easier disconnecting and hookup.

The Roadmaster Coiled Safety Cables, part # RM-643, will keep your vehicle attached to your motor home in the event your tow bar were to disconnect from the hitch ball.

For lighting, you could use the Magnetic Towing Light Kit, part # RM-2120. If you will be towing often, I would recommend the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, part # RM-154 as it would just plug into your vehicle each time you tow.

Most states require using a supplemental braking system when flat-towing a vehicle. I would recommend the Roadmaster Portable Braking System, part # RM-9400, which will help you slow down and reduce wear on your trucks brakes.

You will want to contact your Honda dealership for additional steps needed to take when flat-towing. Some vehicles must be equipped with a transmission lube pump, axle disconnect or free-wheeling hubs before being towed.

I have linked an FAQ on flat-towing and a video review of the RoadMaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520.
