Troubleshooting Driver Side Brake on Trailer That is Smoking and Feels Like it Locks Up

Question:

We have had this happen a few times where the front drivers side of trailer is smoking and feels like the brakes are not releasing. We have even swapped out vehicles thinking it was a problem there with towing system. Not sure what to do at this point. When we stop it quits smoking.

If you are only experiencing a problem with one specific brake assembly, it sounds like a wiring issue directly to that brake assembly.

I recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test for a signal to the brakes only when 12V power is being sent to the brakes first of all. If you are getting constant power there (which means that brake is constantly applied while you are driving) then you have a short somewhere and most likely your 12V power wire is jumping over to that brake signal. Check your wiring to make sure everything looks okay and change accordingly.

Next, if that doesn't work, you need to check your brake magnet for proper function. You can do this by removing the brake magnet and the using a multimeter like part # PT89ZR and a 12V battery as is highlighted in the attached helpful article.

Let me know if you are still having issues and I can help you troubleshoot further.
