Prodigy Brake Controller 90885 Installation in 2012 Toyota Highlander with 4-Pole Wiring
Question:
Hi, I just put a hitch on my 2012 Highlander and bought a 4-way flat output connector from Curt to install for lights. Will be pulling a pop up camper 1,500-1800 lb dry weight. I was reading I would need electric brakes on a trailer over 1,000 lb. in New York State where I live. Can I use a 4 to 7 prong adapter to get the brakes to work or do I need to install a whole new system? Thanks.

If your trailer has electric brakes that you must by law use where you will be traveling you will need to add a trailer brake controller to the Highlander and upgrade your wiring to the 7-way format which is most likely what is on the trailer.
You will need a controller such as the Prodigy P2 # 90885 - pretty much the gold standard for ease of use, reliability and value - and a 7-way wiring upgrade kit # ETBC7. You need only these two items. The wiring kit includes all parts needed to both install the brake controller and to add a 7-way connector to your existing 4-pole harness, which will still be used.
Please refer to the linked installation video showing a Highlander to see the whole process.
An adapter would allow the different connectors to mate but it would not allow the brake controller signal to reach the trailer.
